The main difference between a covenant and a promise is that in a covenant both parties have clear obligations and responsibilities. In a promise, what we can observe is the active role undertaken by one party while the other remains passive. What Jesus accomplished with his death on the cross was a fulfillment of all of the promises that God made. For all people; for all time. When we believe this truth, the promises become a covenant that will change the way we live.
